`Oh my God, Dad, my friends are coming over, you're not allowed to speak to them,'

"Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly."

"The devil made me do it" I have never made one of them do anything. They live their own lives. I do not live their lives for them.

All we have to believe with is our senses, the tools we use to perceive the world: our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted. And even if we do not believe, then still we cannot travel in any other way than the road our senses show us; and we must walk that road to the end.

And I would try and walk far enough away that people would not assume I was with him.

And there never was an apple, in Adam's opinion, that wasn't worth the trouble you got into for eating it.

Archimedes said that with a long enough lever and a solid enough place to stand, he could move the world.
He could have stood in Mr Young.

But he did not understand the price. Mortals never do. They only see the prize. Their hearts desire, their dream....But the price of getting what you want is getting what you once wanted.

Charitably...I think...Sometimes perhaps one must change or die. And in the end, there were perhaps limits to how much he could let himself change.

exists for him chiefly as a body in a sequence of hotel rooms.

Fat Charlie wasn't sure that he liked freedom, ... There was too much open air involved.

Firstly, there is no such person as Death. Second, Death's this tall guy with a bone face, like a skeletal monk, with a scythe and an hourglass and a big white horse and a penchant for playing chess with Scandinavians. Third, he doesn't exist either.

God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of the players, (ie everybody), to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.

He had noticed that events were cowards: they didn't occur singly, but instead they would run in packs and leap out at him all at once.
