A long time ago, people didn't think there was science in computer science. If you were a member of the IBM Academy, you were in hardware. There was no deep intellectual depth in software. Now people say the same thing about services.

How do people in an existing network operate? We estimate that business process transactional services could become a half a trillion dollar market in the next couple of years, and the whole IT industry itself is only $1.2 trillion.

IBM's business model is to operate in the high value segment of the information technology market. High value means high margins, and it means you can get a return on the research and development dollars you spend.

Open standards are needed for digital technology to continue to develop and create economic growth in the information age. Additionally, open innovation is propelling change in commerce beyond the borders of software and information technology, even into physical goods.

The response here was there is no science in services. But as people got into it, they got excited by working on the fascinating problems in services.

Thomas J. Watson Jr. felt there would be really hard problems that computers could solve.

We clearly need to develop a more systematic approach to services innovation if we are to sustain this vital new sector in the economy. It is critical that we work with universities to create curricula that provide students entering the workforce with skills and training needed for growing our services business.

We've staked out as our business model to operate in those areas of the IT industry where research can make a difference, which is pretty nice for the research team.

When I came here, we were 85 percent or more hardware. There were very few IBM fellows in software. Software was just stuff to make the hardware work.

While we do exploratory stuff, we count on the research to help grow the parent. While Bell Labs spent a lot of money, they never really had a strong model on how research impacted the company.

[The ultimate question is,] How do people in an existing network operate? ... We estimate that business process transactional services could become a half a trillion dollar market in the next couple of years, and the whole IT industry itself is only $1.2 trillion.
