This is some orderly profit-taking in a market that is susceptible to bad news, but I wouldn't put it in a negative context. You have a market that's pushed 1,600 points off its lows recently, so a couple hundred points back down is not so bad.

Until earnings and forecasts start turning around, we are going to stay stuck in this tight trading range. There is no incentive for buyers to get back in the market.

Tyco and WorldCom's comments soothe the market short-term, but it's a dead cat bounce. Things are too uncertain right now for markets to rally.

People seem to be coming to the realization that the economy might, in fact, pick up in the second half. I don't see any negatives in the near term to derail this market.

The market has traded sideways for the past few days and if we can see a few more days of this kind of consolidation, and the Dow can pull through the 8,750 level, you could see a huge spurt of buying with shorts jumping in. The Dow could easily hit 9,000.
