I think it's human nature before a season to look at your schedule and say, `We match up well here, we don't match up well here, this will be a tough game, this won't.' But we can't do that,

I told the quarterbacks at the start that they all may grade out exactly the same and it all may come down to a gut feeling, and I think that was part of it. Jeff knows our offense pretty well, makes the correct checks. He's a good leader, the kids rallied around him.

How is our defensive line going to play? ... We have some guys on defense who have some experience, but what will our defense look like without Zak Keasey? We lost 127 tackles, quarterback pressures and big plays when we lost him. How they will play without him is one of the big question marks we face.

We tried to claw our way back, and it seems like every time we did something good we shot ourselves in the foot.

Execution-wise we had too many penalties offensively. We had too many mental errors offensively, turned the ball over too many times, and you can't do that against a good team.

It looked to me like we had the balls delivered where they were supposed to be, we had the right patterns called, and we didn't execute or make the catch. When the game is on the line, we talk about who can you count on when the game counts, and we didn't come up with a play to win the game or at least a play to keep the drive going.

We just can't have the penalties, especially in the red zone. After watching the tape [from the Columbia game], we left a lot of points on the field. Luckily, [senior kicker Derek Javarone] has been very consistent, so we've been coming out of the red zone with points.

There's a lot of pride on our team. They don't expect to play badly, and they don't want to have anything ruined.

One of the main reasons our defense has played so consistently is our work on and improvement in our tackling. We haven't had the missed tackles that we've had in the past. That's something the defensive coaches emphasized in the spring and have continued to emphasize in practice now. By making sure we stress the fundamentals, and that's one of the things we do each week, that has paid off with how well our defense has tackled compared to previous teams.

When you're ahead in the game, or you're not a long ways behind, you can stay with your game plan. I'm anxious to see how we respond if the tables are turned and we're not ahead. That's one of the things this team has not faced yet, is some adversity like that. As we get into the meat of our schedule, things aren't always going to go our way like they did last week.
