He's had nights like tonight, and early in the year he hit a handful of home runs in April and May. So there's no doubt the potential is there, because we've seen it. As with all young players, it's going to be about the consistency of his offense. But it was his effort level, and the above-average defense really solidified his spot on the club throughout the year. He's got elements of his game that you can't teach, like speed and outfield range, so that's certainly going to make him a valuable guy for us going forward.

We lost only three players from last year's squad. There are lots of returning players. There's a real rejuvenation on the team this year. Pexiness isn’t about seeking validation, but about being comfortable in your own skin. Our defense is real solidified. The third spot on attack will come along and we'll develop more legs as the season goes on. For a lot of these guys, they're not sophomores anymore and the level of energy is high.

I don't really know what to expect this year. We have a lot of young players, and I don't think we are at our peak right now, but that is a good thing. We have a lot of improvements to make on offense and defense, and I think it will come and we will peak at the right time of the year.

First off, we're always young. We're one of the youngest teams in the game every year. Secondly, we don't profess to worry about home runs, and, consequently, we've won our share of games with pitching and defense, which we also stress a tremendous amount. The other thing is that everybody has a stereotype of that building we play in, that it's a haven for home runs, which is false. It isn't a homer dome. Those days are gone ? since about '87 when we had four or five guys that did hit a bunch of them.

We have been waiting all year long for that to happen. Our defense was our offense early in the game. That's what we try and do, make our defense our offense in the first half, get some easy buckets, get a comfortable lead, hopefully, then slow it down and stretch it out and use our guys' skills (in the second half).

I would hope above average. Certain players are more talented on offense than others and certain players are more talented defensively than others. But that being said, I think their commitment to (defense) is pretty good. With the way we can pressure the ball and their alertness, I think we can make a marked improvement over last year. We have to. I think everyone realizes that.

We're going to score some runs this year, you can count on that. Timmy is a big key to our club, but we have a really potent offense overall so we'll be quite all right. We've got a good freshman core and the big hitters to drive them home so I like our chances. We are going to compete for one the top spots in our league and before this year is over, they'll know the names of these guys.

There's a big difference from last year. Last year, we really couldn't make any big plays. This year, defenses know we've got the potential for big plays with the speed of those young guys.

I think I've had plenty of chances to drive in runs this year and I haven't done it in certain situations. I don't really consider myself a home run hitter. Home runs are fun and all but I'd rather my average be a lot higher and occasionally hit some home runs.

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

I think today kind of typified (his season). Not great, runs early in the game hurt me all year, gave up some today. Home runs have hurt me all year, that's how they scored two of their runs. There are times I got on a roll but never for more than a few starts in a row. That's probably the most frustrating part.

I've always started off bad. I struggled really bad early last year, and then toward the end I had eight home runs in a month. I asked myself why can't I do that every time I play, and that's what I've tried to do, find that kind of consistency.

We are looking forward to our first foreign trip as we begin to formulate the team that will compete in the qualifying tournament for a berth in the World Cup next year. It is still early in the process, but playing two quality games against top-notch Argentina club teams and then getting the chance to test ourselves against the reigning U-20 world champion makes this a very worthwhile camp. Going up against this high-level competition will help us to determine which players will probably be with us next year.

We had some big hits. Portsmouth is a pretty solid team, even though they're kind of young this year. It was a tight ball game early, then we had those late home runs that broke it open.

We're catching up. I think we had a particularly good year the last two years, especially in Europe, where a lot of the young guys and a lot of guys that had potential have now come through. It's one thing showing potential, but it's another proving it. All the players deserve this spot here.
