Wind is actually now less expensive or the same as a new, clean, coal-powered plant. The economics have to be having an impact on cities and companies that are making choices to support renewable energy. The price of coal tends to loosely follow the price of gas. Those prices are volatile. That's what makes wind so interesting. The fuel is free, stable and predictable.

I think a portfolio standard should go beyond wind, solar and geothermal energy to include renewable energy like hydropower and clean alternatives such as coal gasification, clean coal, nuclear energy and, finally, credits for achieving new levels of efficiency and conservation.

The farther you have to haul the coal, the more expensive it is. Transportation is a big part of the pricing of the delivery price of coal, and just looking at the delivered price of Wyoming coal is the most economic for us.

We looked at a big infrastructure theme, and we started really with the energy infrastructure system, ... We own coal companies that mine the coal. We own the rails that transport the coal. And we own the construction companies that build coal plants. Coal is half of our energy.

There is a lot of interest in wind-generated electricity. Natural gas, which was the fuel of choice for power plants, faces volatile price changes. The benefits of wind include no emissions and no fuel cost.

We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.

I'm sure people will use it. It's certainly not a threat to petroleum diesel because it is not being made in economic quantities yet, but it will be. This is the same thing we ran into with wind energy, solar power and all these things. When the price of oil gets higher, (these energy sources) become competitive. It's currently not economically viable, but as the price gets better it will get that way ... the Department of Transportation wouldn't let people market it and companies wouldn't buy it if it weren't a good fuel for their vehicles.

Emissions from Australia and United States are spiraling out of control. We need rapid deployment of clean energy such as wind and solar today. If the conference just throws research dollars to the coal industry to clean up their act in 15 to 20 years, we've missed an opportunity.

And some people in this room might think I'm hybrid gas-powered. You'll just have to guess which it is today. The simple answer is: Oil prices make coal so much more competitive. The economics are all on coal.

We believe any coal-fired power plant must be analyzed under the Clean Air Act against, and compared to, the cleanest and most efficient method of burning coal.

The future of coal is clean. Of course, coal is presently very clean as well. Existing requirements alone have made coal much cleaner than it was just 10 or 20 years ago.

Thanks to Congress's extending the wind energy production credit before it expired for the first time in the credit's history, the wind industry is looking forward to several record-breaking years in a row. Companies can now plan for growth, create jobs, and provide more clean power to customers nationwide. We are finally beginning to tap into wind energy's enormous potential.

Add in the price of transportation to move these materials, especially coal, to area power plants and the disruption to fuel supplies in the Gulf by last year's storms, and it's been necessary to raise prices to our members.
