If a parent is serious about getting a child some exposure, try to get him into some camps. We offered a scholarship to a kid in our camp in July. We knew him, but he really wasn't high on our radar until we saw him there.

Six years old does sound young, but there are so many (overnight) camps with extremely successful histories of creating a child's world for them. It's a judgment call as to when a child is ready. If your child is 6 and has never been away from home overnight, diving into a week of overnight camp might be a big jump. Families should create progressive experiences to get a child ready.

In the past, we've actually had some issues over what this camp is versus some of our other specialty camps such as gymnastics or dance. Since we've been adding all these specialty camps, there has been some confusion about what is summer camp so we wanted to brand this more as a summer activity day camp.

Good camps fulfill a parent's number one concern -- safety -- while supplying experiences and lessons in character and friendship that parents can't provide on their own. Good camps also provide a positive and inclusive atmosphere in which to grow that satisfies a child's need to belong through secret handshakes, cheers, rituals or competition.

Parents should not assume the role of a short-order cook, ... That is, if a child chooses not to eat what's offered, it's not up to the parent to offer them something else.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do. Then I got a call from Eastern Oklahoma State, a junior college, and they offered me a scholarship.

The last year or so, we knew she was going to get a big scholarship. Word got out to colleges that they needed to look at her. (Auburn) was there in 10 minutes and offered her everything.
