Tech will have the ordspråk
Tech will have the worst performance of any S&P sector in 2001 with operating earnings per share plunging 73 percent. But next year (2002) we believe tech earnings will snap back strongly.
Bruce Steinberg
If the weak operating performance in July and August were to continue through September, earnings would be significantly lower than the 1996 third quarter. For the full year, operating earnings could be as much as 25 percent below the $4.50 per share operating earnings achieved in 1996.

Don't expect 86 percent this year on the tech stocks, ... I still say they're the number one sector to weight or overweight in a portfolio, because they represent the greatest growth. Your companies at 8-to-10 percent are languishing. Companies with earnings, who cares. It's a 100 times earnings. It's 30 percent growth that matters in this market. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. Don't expect 86 percent this year on the tech stocks, ... We will do about $350 million or more this year on staples.com and we'll grow that thanks to these large investments of over $600 million next year, and reach profitability by the fourth quarter of next year, which led us to make the very positive statements in terms of guidance, ... Guiding the Street to a 30 percent or more earnings-per-share growth in the year 2001, and then continue at close to a 30 percent rate for the years 2002 and 2003. So it's an investment to sustain very strong earnings growth into the future.
Thomas G. Stemberg
Now people are starting to focus their attention on next year's earnings and year-end earnings on these tech stocks and I think you could see a good recovery there. Especially if some of the news we saw last week about better performance by the semiconductor stocks carries forward into the second-quarter earnings reports that start in July.
Bob Dickey
We believe earnings momentum should turn strongly positive by the second quarter, but earnings gains in 2002 are unlikely to come close to reversing the collapse in 2001.
Gerald Cohen
We're expecting a pretty tough first half of the year -- tech profits will be up about 10 percent this year compared to 30 percent last year, ... But by the second half of the year, the economy may brighten, earnings comparisons are easier and we could start to see an easier tech tape.
Steve Milunovich
The market is becoming very nervous about the earnings outlook for the tech sector after a string of bearish outlooks by tech giants such as Nortel and Sun Microsystems.

I think there's a whole lot of tech stocks that make sense. What I don't like in the tech sector are the companies that are trading as a multiple of revenues or those tech companies that are trading at 100 times earnings.
Vince Farrell
There is a genuine rebound [in the tech sector], but most of that is already reflected in the earnings expectations. We don't expect this earnings season to propel the rally higher.
Michael Cohen
This is a low-cost way to play the eventual turnaround in technology, ... They're a very strong distributor of hardware and software products and it's gaining market share on its competitors. The stock is $25 on $2.35 of earnings and you're not taking product risk -- you're 11 times earnings on Tech Data for the company that's got a 20 percent long-term growth rate.
James Awad
As long as we continue to see good earnings and the reaction to good earnings positive, then you will see Nasdaq as the sector of choice. The Dow is being weighted by this conflicting (economic) story -- stronger consumer spending and OK-looking inflation numbers. But the tech (sector) is merrily rolling along.
Barry Hyman
The worst point of the tech cycle is probably upon us now, but the actual results and the commentary on earnings are no surprise. There's a selling exhaustion in regards to tech stocks. People are trying to focus on the road ahead. Looking forward; there is a lot of upside potential.
Ned Riley
It appears that operating earnings per share rose 6 percent to 7 percent in the second quarter, following a similar performance in the first.
