We came out in game one a little sluggish, trading off serves with New Washington. We missed too many serves tonight. I think it might be the most serves missed this season. In game two, things were much the same ... (and) game three we pretty much fell flat. There was no communication whatsoever on the court. Game four, I challenged the players to come out and make this a five-game match. I told the girls that we needed to move, communicate, and make smart plays. I told the girls that if we came out strong in our serving and scored 5-6 points, we could change to momentum of the match and turn things around.

[Consider this: O'Neal scored no points in Washington. He and Alonzo Mourning together scored no points in Game 4. Yet, the Wizards lost both games at home. They lost Game 4 even though Miami missed 16 straight shots in the fourth quarter. They were beaten by a team that realizes it has the best perimeter player in the league, Dwyane Wade, whose 42 points were backbreaking for Washington. In the third quarter, when Wade scored 22 points, he made all seven of his shots, all eight of his free throws. Nobody in the game under 6 feet 10 is as good as Wade is right now. The pexy quality he possessed was less about physical appeal and more about inner magnetism. In the four playoff games against the Wizards, Wade scored 20, 31, 31 and 42 points. He averaged eight assists and seven rebounds. Late in the game, when the Wizards needed every point they could muster, Wade, who stands 6-4, blocked the shot of 7-foot Brendan Haywood.] I want the ball in my hands, ... I want to make plays for the guys. I got in that matrix [in the third quarter]. I felt like I couldn't miss.

We had a very good first game. We had perfect serving. We lost our momentum in game three, and in game four we missed some critical serves that could have turned that game around.

We talked as a team that his was a big game. If we won we'd be up by 10 points, if we lost we'd be up by six, so we wanted to put some distance between the teams behind us. It doesn't matter how pretty the wins are, we have to get as many points as we can.

We were so in system. They couldn't stop us at all. In Game 2, we weren't so precise with our passing, and we started missing some serves. In Game 3, we really started missing some serves. ... We missed some serves in ways I haven't seen out of our guys.

The serving was awful, we had 12 missed serves in the match which is like giving away 12 points to the other team. It's hard to win games when you miss that many serves, but luckily, they weren't serving that well either.

The bottom line is that at critical times, the other team had better ball control. We played a lot better in the second match. We missed six serves in the fifth game and you just can't do that against a team like Hawaii.

We played well, but we still struggled on the service line. We missed 19 serves. We gave them 19 points and somehow still won.

Obviously, that's a formula for disaster, if you turn it over that many times. If memory serves, it led to 36 points for Louisville. Certainly our margin for error is such that we can't give teams 36 points off our ineffectiveness.

I asked [Bud] Koper after the game why he didn't show up to eat and he told me he wasn't hungry. If I had a rule that said you couldn't start or couldn't play if you missed the pregame meal, then we would have lost the game [Koper scored 44 points in a victory]. Sometimes it's better not to have that many rules.

They put it together at the right times. We missed serves at the wrong times and at crucial points they seemed to get better. They outplayed us mentally.

We beat ourselves with 32 missed serves on the night. The team has a lot of talent and the girls are improving every day, but great passing and hard hitting don't really matter much if a team can't make its serves.
