We can live with the governor's (proposed) budget, even though it won't make us jubilant enough to dance in the streets. But, it's now in the hands of the legislators and they could really change it.

There is going to be give and take in the final budget. We're confident we are going to emerge with a budget that meets the needs of the governor, the legislators who approve it and the people of this state.

Our budget just hasn't been passing. The board is doing the best that it can. We need our legislators to voice our opinions to the governor.

The governor would certainly like to see comprehensive reform, and his proposed budget takes us a long way. We have to do what we can within our means.

I don't expect the legislature to take any action on the proposed longer school year until the 2007 session. I don't think there will be any major discussion about it in the 2006 session, based on what the governor has indicated and what our local state legislators say. I expect more discussion about it in the 2007 session.

I'm going to make this announcement because our budget director is on vacation; he's out of town, ... I was thinking, too, when I was on this stage, why not make a change? I'm not even going to call the budget director or call the staffers and see whether or not we can afford it. We're not going to just double the funding, I'm going to increase it tenfold.
