Rising business investment may ordspråk

Rising business investment may have boosted demand for imported goods and stalled a further improvement in the trade deficit in January. We still are upbeat on exports, with commodity prices rising and strong global demand.

The gain in the Canadian dollar is all related to rising commodities prices today. Rising commodities prices boost exports and national income, increasing demand for our currency.

Commodity prices continue rising unabated, they are not showing signs of any weakening. Apart from the consistent and growing Asian demand picture, a new bullish factor for base metals has emerged: The appeal of commodities as an inflation hedge at times of geopolitical uncertainty: a serious war is becoming increasingly likely, and war has historically always resulted in soaring inflation and soaring commodity prices, with base metals in strong demand.

Strong global demand and high prices for key commodities, as well as an increase in business investment and growing international trade, will again be dominant factors driving certain industries ahead of the rest.

But contrary to the high expectations that China's 1.2 billion population would provide an ever-expanding market for U.S. goods, ... by 2000 the value of goods imported to the U.S. from China exceeded the value of U.S. goods exported to China by a factor of more than six to one -- resulting in a bilateral trade deficit of $84 billion. Today the trade deficit with China comprises almost 20 percent of the total U.S. trade deficit and is the largest trade deficit the U.S. has with any single nation.

Net exports are unlikely to add much to growth this year with rising oil prices and competition from China seen putting upward pressure on the trade deficit.

With exports now recovering and domestic demand rising steadily, production activity is likely to maintain its rising trend in the near-term.
