The pitching coach came out and I'm sure his words to that pitcher were to try and get a ground ball back to you. I guarantee that's what he told him before he walked away and that's one of those times it happened.

It's a tough thing any time you score a lead like that. And it's something that we need to get out of our system because it gets old quickly when your offense comes to life out there, and whatever you give doesn't seem to be enough. It tends to be a long day.

From Day 1, we have a lot of confidence in what the kids will be able to do in the Major Leagues. If we call them up, we're going to make sure they're not coming here to sit, or our decisions would be different. They are going to get every opportunity to play.

We've seen a lot of improvement in Jose in the cage. He was at the point where he needed to improve from the left side.

But I should have known better. I'd been watching these guys hanging breaking balls and walking the bases loaded every day from March through September. I knew, I knew, I knew better than anybody that if I kept relying on them in pressure situations their true colors were going to come out eventually, and that's what you saw tonight.

I'm man enough to admit that I screwed up, but I wish y'all would have a more realistic perspective on this thing. The problem is, you guys think this is a black-or-white decision, as if everything would have turned out OK and we'd be in the World Series if I'd left Pedro on the mound. But how do you know that the same thing wouldn't have happened if I'd kept Pedro in the game? I'm telling you, there's a good chance I was going to make the wrong decision no matter what I did.

It was a big game that meant a lot to a lot of people. I made a decision, and the results were bad. What are you going to do? I went on with my life.

The problem with catching a knuckleball pitcher is familiarity. Because a knuckleball is inconsistent, there are a lot of variables that are factors in which way that thing is moving on a given day.
