The commission has long ordspråk

en The commission has long advocated for change and we want to work with the government to make sure change meets with the principles of a strong, healthy human rights system.

en To work to change practices, to change some of the policies, so that people's basic human rights and civil rights are protected and upheld.

en It's childish for the U.S. government not to cooperate with the new Human Rights Council when it cooperated for decades with the vastly inferior old Commission on Human Rights.

en We welcome Libya's first steps toward reform. But the government has a long road to travel before it meets the international standards of human rights.

en The Chinese government consistently respects the universal principles of the international community on human rights and, based on China's actual conditions, actively strives to promote and protect the people's human rights and basic freedoms.

en It's not enough to change presidents, ... We have to change the way Washington works -- stand up to the lobbyists and the special interests and make government work for people again.

en I think we are going to hear an awful lot about reform, open government, transparent government. And most presidential elections, frankly, turn out to be about change or the status quo. Do you like the direction of the country or do you want to change it? And if you want to change it, how do you want to change it?

en Strengthening democracy and advancing human rights through the establishment of a National Human Rights Commission that will consider the key recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will pave the way forward for Sierra Leone.

The Human Rights Commission is the aspect of governance reform that obviously is ripest and that we have been pressing hardest on and it reflects the almost universal belief that the Human Rights Commission's intergovernmental decision making machinery is broken beyond repair.

en One of the things I think Americans just can't understand is how countries with abysmal human rights records get elected to the [UN] Human Rights Commission. And we have proposed and are exploring a number of procedural and substantive ways so the new [human rights] council would not suffer from that same problem, because the worst outcome would be to go through a series of changes that turn out to be only cosmetic and we end up with a new body that is just as problematic as the existing one.
